Positively charged, organic contaminants have increased within environmental soils, resulting in a growing need for predictive sorption models to address the fate of such substances.  Sorption interactions between organic cations and clay minerals are the result of Van der Waals and electrostatic interactions with the mineral surface. By use of interlayer electrostatic potential mapping, we seek to develop principles to understand the role of electrostatic interactions in the differential absorption from primary to quaternary amines and across clays with various characteristic substitutions.
