Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a diverse class of molecular metal-oxide clusters, which are typically made up of early transition metals (e.g. vanadium, molybdenum, ot tungsten), with a variety of applications in materials, medicine, and catalysis. Due to the structural flexibility of vanadium ions, polyoxovanadate (POV) clusters are of particular interest as they can adopt a wide-range of morphologies that cannont be accessed by their molybdate and tungstate counterparts. In particular, the use of templating anions can give rise to unique POV scaffolds with exciting chemical properties. In this work, a series of ring-shaped, POV-alkoxide clusters with encapsulated halide anions, [Bu4N][(VO)n(OCH3)2nX] (X = F, Cl, Br and n = 5, 6, 7, respectively), were synthesized. Lewis acidic halide salts, MnX2 and InX3 (X = F, Cl, Br), are necessary for cluster formation and are the source of the encapsulated halide. Formation of these clusters also appears to be solvent-dependent. These cyclic structures have interesting physical properties and can be used as precursors to access other POV motifs.
