Metal-Organic Frameworks provide unique guest-host interactions making them excellent adsorbents; however, there is little information regarding their use in adsorbent materials for water remediation applications. The scarcity of drinkable water has become an ever-increasing global concern making the development of adsorbent materials for water filtration a popular area of research. The synthesis of an advanced adsorbent material that incorporates the copper-based metal-organic framework; MOF-199 (HKUST-1) into a cellulose matrix is presented herein. The resulting cellulose-HKUST-1 composite material creates a porous, biomimetic adsorbent for water filtration that exhibits antimicrobial properties toward the Gram-negative bacterium <i>Escherichia coli</i>. Incorporation of HKUST-1 into the polymer matrix enhances the stability of MOF-199 in the presence of water allowing for viable HKUST-1 adsorption sites in aqueous solution. The adsorption properties of the composite material in solution were investigated by monitoring the absorbance of methylene blue dye (MB) in the presence of cellulose-HKUST-1 composite beads over time. Adsorption of MB to the cellulose-HKUST-1 composite beads follows pseudo-second order kinetics and is best described by a mixed Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model.
