Long-term, minimally invasive optical monitoring of blood analytes such as glucose presents a unique opportunity to improve health outcomes for many conditions. One approach to this goal would be to encapsulate appropriately emissive and responsive fluorescent sensors inside biocompatible carriers that would provide protection from the clearance mechanisms that maintain and protect the circulatory system. One such carrier are erythrocyte ghosts, which have been shown to provide biocompatible delivery of drugs and long-term enzyme supplementation to patients. For this application, the sensors must be stable for the circulating lifetime of the erythrocyte ghosts; non-cell permeable to be retained inside the cells; and fluoresce at near-IR wavelengths. The synthesis and properties of such sensors are described along with proof of concept in vivo studies.<br/>
