Nanoparticles (NPs) are attractive candidates for many biomedical applications, such as drug delivery vehicles, contrast agents for various forms of imaging, or sensitizers for photothermal cancer therapy. For potential applications such as these, detailed information on how NP size, shape, and surface chemistry affect the kinetics and specificity of cellular uptake would be extremely valuable. The presented work aims to generate such information by developing novel correlated optical and electrochemical imaging methods to track the uptake of individual NPs within cells and examine their effects on cell viability in situ. The application of these methods to study the uptake of Au NPs of varying size and shape by HeLa cells will be presented.<br/>
