Separations of chemical commodities currently consume ca. 15% of the world’s energy production. Carbon dioxide separations are among the industrially and environmentally most important separations. Supercapacitive Swing Adsorption (SSA) is an alternative gas separation technique which achieves selective, and reversible adsorption and desorption of carbon dioxide by capacitive charge and discharge of supercapacitor carbon electrodes. SSA is attractive from an energy perspective because a capacitor is an energy storage device, and a large fraction of the capacitive energy used for charging can be recovered upon discharge. Additional advantages are that no temperature changes and moving parts are required, and only inexpensive activated carbons and aqueous NaCl solutions are needed. The scientific principles of SSA and the design, construction, and testing of SSA modules for the separation of CO2 from CO2/N2 mixtures will be presented.
