The interfaces and interphases that separates electrolytes from electrode surfaces have significant impact on the thermodynamics and kinetic of the electrode process. It allows the electrode to be operated at potentials far beyond the thermodynamic stability of electrolytes, enhancing the battery voltage thus energy density. However, it also reduce the electrochemical reaction kinetics and coulombic efficiency. In this talk, the critical role of the interface and interphase in aqueous and solid state electrolyte batteries will be discussed. How the structure and property of interface and interphase of the electrodes affect the electrochemical stability window, reaction kinetics, and cycle life will be addressed. New criteria for interphase are proposed.<br/>
