Organic pigments have been used in the coating industry due to their great photosensitivity, hue, color strength and transparency. However some disadvantages of using organic pigments are the limited hiding power, poor dispersion ability and weather durability. Polymer encapsulation of organic pigments has been demonstrated to improve pigment dispersion and weather durability in the various coating formulations. We describe a method to encapsulate a new class of biologically derived phenoxazone-based pigments into polymeric capsules and test the ability of these hybrid materials to be used as coatings. We observe that the pigment containing granules have enriched optical properties including a broad absorption and diffuse forward and backward scattering when compared to non-pigmented particles. Our findings suggest a new method is to design bio-inspired light scattering nanomaterials featuring pigments encapsulated in waterproof polymers that can be used in various coating applications<br/>
