Unconventional source rock reservoirs contain not only complex mineral matrices but also hydrocarbon-generating organic matter such as kerogen and bitumen. These organic components profoundly affect the mechanical properties of the rock formation, in particular the tensile crack opening behavior that dominates the efficiency of hydraulic fracturing.  Further, the high ductility of kerogen and bitumen relative to the inorganic silicates, clays and other minerals has implicated them in long-term production challenges such as proppant embedment.  In order to mitigate the effects of the ductile organic matter upon the productivity of shale gas wells, a new fracturing fluid with reactive properties was designed for subterranean application.  The fluid was tested against several different shales exhibiting various organic matter thermal maturities, and its properties optimized accordingly.  In addition to altering the mechanical properties of the rock, the fluid produced a number of unexpected features in the source shales including enhanced fracture face permeability, organic matter embrittlement, and even favorable wettability changes.<br/>
