Despite the vast importance of polyphosphorylated molecules in biology, efficient synthetic routes to these chemicals remain sparse. Utilizing common peptide coupling reagents and lipophilic cations we have developed a simple and scalable synthesis of functionalized metaphosphates. Our functionalization procedure is amenable to a variety of nucleophilic substrates, giving rise to novel phosphate architectures and phosphorylated molecules. The resulting functionalized metaphosphate species provide a convenient synthetic route to phosphorylated biomolecules and show promise as interesting transition metal ligands.
