Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) has been regarded as one of the most important concepts in heterogeneous catalysis, which has been almost exclusively discussed in metal/oxide catalysts. Here, we show that SMSI is active in metal/non-oxide interfaces. A gold/molybdenum carbide (Au/MoCx) catalyst is featured by highly dispersed Au overlayers, strong charge transfer between metal and support, and unprecedented activity in low temperature water-gas-shift reaction (LT-WGSR). The SMSI effect at the metal/carbide interfaces has been attributed to noble-metal-like properties of many carbide. Furthermore, we reported the strong interaction between Ni and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) support. Under dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction condition Ni nanoparticles are covered by boron oxide species (BOx). The resulting Ni@BOx structure show excellent DRM activity and 40 h long-term stability at 750 oC, better than the most used oxide support. The oxygen-free supports manifest the strong interaction with metals. The results open a novel way to understand SMSI effect and utilize the non-oxides as supports for industrial catalytic applications.
