Dual-Graphite chemistry is a promising alternative to traditional Lithium Ion technology owing to its minimal environmental impact and lower cost. However, in order to penetrate into the market for transportation and grid storage modalities, advancements need to be made in the performance of dual-graphite systems so they are functionally competitive with traditional Lithium Ion batteries. Before such dual-graphite systems can be implemented, a better understanding is needed of the mechanisms by which anions intercalate into graphite, chiefly in terms of the effects on its electronic structure. In this work, a combination of C K-Edge and F K-Edge X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-Ray Diffraction, and X-Ray Raman Spectroscopy are utilized to gain mechanistic insight into how the electronic and crystal structure of graphite changes during its performance as a high voltage positive electrode. This study offers critical insight into the redox processes that occur in these novel electrodes, vital to the improvement of the performance of these systems in the future.
