Artificial photosynthesis (AP) offers one of the most appealing approaches for converting solar energy into chemical fuels. This talk will highline some of our recent progress in achieving effective AP systems using both water splitting and CO2 reduction as environmentally benign approaches. A series of thiolate catalysts based on first row transition metals, especially Co, Ni, give great activity and robustness for light-driven H2 generation. Novel mixed-metal oxides have been developed to obtain exceptional activity in photocathode application. Molecular tetranuclear manganese models of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) in photosystem II exhibit water oxidation activity in promoting O-O bond formation. A simple yet highly selective catalytic system for CO2 reduction to C≥2 hydrocarbons on a polycrystalline Cu electrode that uses N-substituted pyridinium additives achieves selectivities of 70 - 80% for C2 and C3 products.
