Molybdenum-containing enzymes are ubiquitous in nature. These enzymes are responsible for the metabolism of sulfur-, nitrogen-, and carbon-containing compounds, often through the catalysis of oxygen-atom reactions. Many of the early studies into these molybdoenzymes involved the synthesis of small molecule model complexes. Indeed, small molecule complexes are still important in increasing our understanding of the electronic structure and reactivity of the molybdoenzyme active site. Current models of molybdoenzymes focus on the interesting redox-active pterin ligand; however, the role of the placeholder ligand in these models has yet to be investigated. Herein, we present the synthesis of a molybdenum complex bearing an oxygen-donor scorpionate ligand as a model for sulfite oxidase.
