<br/>Bis-thiosemicarbabzone metal complexes are well known in the literature with applications in medical imaging, therapeutics, and electrocatalysis. The parent ligand, diacetyl-2,3-bis(N4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazone) (ATSM) is highly variable in the backbone and pendant positions. Transamination provides an attractive method to vary the substituents at the pendant position. Using this approach, four new ligands have been prepared from N,N-dimethylethylendiamine and the nickel(II) complexes isolated (1 – 4). Each complex has been thoroughly characterized spectroscopically. Electrochemical investigations reveal the complexes with tertiary amines are similar to those of NiATSM. However, upon alkylation to the quaternary amine results in a cathodic shift of the reduction potential. The impact of these changes on the electrocatalytic proton reduction activity of these complexes will be reported.
