Synthesis and characterization of trans-dichlorobis(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) chloride, trans-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl, were performed. This complex was heated to produce the thermodynamic product, cis-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl. Magnetic susceptibility, conductivity measurements, UV-Vis, and IR spectroscopic techniques were utilized to probe the electronic, magnetic, and light absorption properties of the two geometric isomers. Trans-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl is a green complex that absorbs in the region of 618 nm and undergoes hydrolysis in water. The cis isomer is chiral, purple in color, absorbs in the region of 509 nm, and exhibits stability in aqueous solutions once formed. The transformation of trans to cis-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl in different solvents at higher temperatures (80 °C) was monitored using UV-Vis spectroscopy. This poster will present the effect of nature of solvent to the isomerization process, computational studies on trans/cis-[Co(en)2Cl2]Cl, and possible applications of [Co(en)2Cl2]Cl and [Co(L)2Cl2]Cl (where L = bidentate phosphine).
