Intracellular pH plays an important role in cellular behaviors and pathological conditions. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dyes have been widely studied in fluorescence imaging in detection of pH in living cells, tissues and organisms. The use of NIR probes enables deep photon penetration in tissue, minimizes photo-damage to biological samples, and produces low background auto-fluorescence from biomolecules present in living systems. The number of new analyte-responsive NIR fluorescent probes has increased substantially in recent years as a consequence of intense research efforts. Herein, our group has designed, synthesized, and reported a series of NIR fluorescent probes which have excellent permeability of cell membrane, good stability, high quantum yield and nice water solubility. Those fluorescent platforms can specifically be activated in cancer cells or tumors, allowing for development of a variety of novel fluorescent probes for accurate detection of different analytes in applications of chemical and biological sensing and imaging.<br/>
