Some new metal-carboxylate complexes were synthesized and fully characterized using different spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H-NMR) and X-ray data. Some non-paramagnetic metal complexes were characterized by 1H-NMR. The reaction of different carboxylate ligands with metal ions mixed with/without nitrogen-donors ligands prepared mostly at an ambient temperature/room temperature on stirring at 1100 rpm afforded novel mononuclear and dinuclear metal complexes. The nitrogenous based ligands used are also known to be bioactive in nature. These include nicotinamide, metronidazole, 2,2-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline. Thirty new metal complexes were synthesized and characterized using some spectroscopic techniques. The single crystals of seventeen (17) novel metal complexes were obtained via slow evaporation at room temperature and characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography (SCXRD). The establishment of the complexes by SCXRD shows that nicotinamide and metronidazole acted as monodentate ligands while 2,2-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline were bidentate ligand. The carboxylate ligands starting from 2-bromobenzoic acid, p-toluic acid, 2-furoic acid, trichloroacetic acid and p-methoxylbenzoic acid exhibited both monodentate, bidentate/bidentate-bridging ligands via their carboxylate functional group. The use of 2-bromobenzoic acid, para-toluic acid, trichloroacetic in the preparation of the complexes gave a new set of binuclear metal complexes. The successful synthesis of another contending copper paddlewheel dimer is a breakthrough in this present work. Detailed syntheses, characterization and biological potency including magnetic and EPR properties will be presented.
