Understanding the science and technology related to renewable energy is an important topic for the education of emerging green and clean technologies. The science concepts linked to green energy receive limited discussion in traditional school curricula. In this study, a simple teaching module for students to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to power a small fan motor was designed. This module was tested by students in high school, middle school, and upper level elementary schools. In the fabrication process, the expensive massive pressing machine was replaced with readily available electric ions, creating a cost-effective module. The field studies revealed that both the high school juniors and seniors were able to complete the module in 2.5 hour class sessions. Also, more than 80% of students successfully constructed the DSSCs to harvest the light to propel their fan motors. A follow up multiple-choice questionnaire was used to assess the degree of understanding high school seniors had of photovoltaic cells. Students found it cool and interesting to hand-make solar batteries to drive small fan motors. The students were not only able to complete the basic scientific training with patience, but also explored the working principles of solar cells. Thus, 90% of testers believed this module was the most suitable for high school students.
