Climate change is a civilization-challenging issue that affects every citizen around the globe. Promotion of “climate science literacy and education for citizens and policy makers” is a key recommendation in the ACS Climate Change Public Policy Statement “to combat climate change.” My path to citizen science engagement in climate change literacy began in earnest more than two decades ago through public presentations. Since then, my climate communication activities have branched into multiple stems including writing a “Global Hot Topics” blog hosted by my local newspaper, reporting from the annual UN climate conference (COP) as a member of the press, and mentoring students who participate in the annual COP under sponsorship of the ACS Committee on Environmental Improvement. The ACS student COP project has produced two symposium series books to date that address the science as well as social, political, ethical, and economic issues linked to climate change. My climate literacy activities prompted an invitation to join the Huffington Post blog team. I take student groups to Costa Rica each year to investigate climate change impacts, vulnerability, and adaptation. My citizen science goal is to use a real world narrative and the emerging concept of risk framing to help each of us personally assess both the challenge of, and urgent need to address climate change, for the benefit of Earth and its people.
