Synthetic nanodiamond is an inexpensive material that has found applications in many industries, especially in abrasives. We have been studying nanodiamond particles as robust supports for catalytic species. Nanodiamond particles offer advantages of mechanical and chemical stability, improved aggregation resistance for nanoparticle catalysis, facile collection of materials, and reusability even under extreme reaction conditions. By exploiting the rich surface chemistry of nanodiamond, several surface modification strategies have been developed to immobilize metal nanoparticles as well as metal-ligand complexes. Both direct covalent surface modification as well as synthesis of polymer/diamond composites will be discussed. The nanodiamond particles were used as supports for gold nanoparticles and palladium complexes. The materials were characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy with x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy detectors. The catalytic activity of supported gold nanoparticles and palladium complexes were evaluated and the morphology of the systems were assessed both before and after catalysis to observe changes in the catalysts.<br/>
