Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (ERC) offers a unique advantage in generating fuel by utilizing CO2 as raw material. In turn, mitigating CO2 levels possibly from the point source. However, high overpotential requirement due to slow kinetics, low conversion, and a wide range of mixed products are the challenges in ERC. Hence, the majority of the research is being focused on finding an efficient electrocatalyst with tuneable product selectivity. In this study, it has been found that incorporation of ZnO to the CuO electrocatalyst plays an important role towards ERC. The electrocatalyst is synthesized by a facile method and the electrocatalyst is found selective towards carbon monoxide synthesis having a Faradaic efficiency of ~13%. The synthesized electrocatalyst is characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. Electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts is determined using linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry experiments combined with cathode product analysis is conducted to evaluate the conversion capabilities of the electrocatalyst.
