The synthesis of olefin metathesis catalysts by wet impregnation of an alumina support by a perrhenate solution leads to materials with a strongly non-linear dependence of activity on Re loading. In contrast, a new method of anhydrous grafting of TMS perrhenate results in atomically dispersed Re sites that show very high activity even at very low loadings, as well as enhanced stability.  The nature of these sites and their relationship to the active sites for olefin metathesis was investigated by spectroscopic and kinetic methods, in comparison to conventional supported catalysts.
