Current advances in thermosetting formulations have investigated the incorporation of furan based building blocks to epoxy-amine networks through various chemistries to achieve superior thermal and mechanical properties. A furan-based epoxy-amine thermoset was prepared using a tetra-functional epoxy monomer and a furanyl amine hardener. This study investigates the structure-property relationships of the furan-based monomers with its functionalities. When compared to furan-based material prepared with di-functional epoxy monomer, this material showed a significantly enhanced glass transition temperature. The enhancement in glass transition temperature is due to increased crosslinking density within the polymer system and shortened methylene linkages on the epoxy monomer. In addition, tetra-functional cycloaliphatic epoxy was prepared and cured with amine hardener Bis- (p-aminocyclohexyl) methane (PACM). This material was compared with the tetra-functional furan-based material on thermal and mechanical properties. The study shows that the renewable tetra-functional furan-based thermosets possess much higher modulus than cycloaliphatic tetra-functional thermosets with a comparable glass transition temperature, which is suitable for coating, adhesive and composites applications.<br/>
