<br/>Operando spectroscopic techniques capable of uncovering the surface reaction events proceeded on solid catalyst under actual heterogeneous catalysis conditions are very attractive. They can provide real information for the rational design of more efficient heterogeneous catalysts. Unfortunately, the most frequently used FT-IR in surface science is quite limited as operando means. This is because it works in single-beam mode and can not distinguish simultaneously the spectra of surface species from those caused by gas phase molecular vibration and heat irradiation. This means that the single-beam FT-IR is unable to provide reliable molecular level information about the dynamic states of catalytic active sites and about the surface reaction intermediates during the heterogeneous catalysis reactions, for example, most of the gas-solid phase catalytic reactions which need elevated reaction temperatures and pressures. Therefore, we developed a new dual-beam FT-IR spectral system with two identical interferometer infrared optical platforms via the innovative strategy of coupling and integration. On this basis, a dual-beam IR cell reactor, which allows to be used under high temperatures and high pressures, will be tailored for the dual-beam FT-IR spectral system. Both the dual-beam FT-IR spectral system and the dual-beam IR cell reactor will then be used to construct an operando FT-IR research system, which is suitable for the study of the surface events occurred during various gas-solid phase catalytic reactions under real conditions. The preliminary study shows that the performance of the dual-beam FT-IR spectral prototype system can satisfactorily overcome the shortcomings suffered by a single-beam FT-IR spectrometer. The dual-beam FT-IR system is a powerful tool for the operando study of the surface dynamic chemistry of heterogeneous catalysis.
