A family of lanthanide (Ln) cyclooctatetraenyl (COT) chloride complexes has been prepared and structurally characterized. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the dimeric molecular structure with symmetric chloride bridges and an η8-bound COT in the [Ln(COT)Cl(THF)n]2 complexes (n = 1 and 2). The comparative analysis of molecular structures of a series of lanthanide analogues (Ln = Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho and Lu) clearly showed the effect of metal ion size on main geometric parameters. Clear trends in the Ln-C and Ln-Cl bond length have been revealed. The products were characterized spectroscopically and their bulk purity was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The magnetic measurements have been carried out for this set and the results will be discussed.
