After the important discovery of soluble hexachloroplatinic acid based platinum catalyst by from Dow Corning in late 1950s, the hydrosilylation reaction became an elegant and widely-applied method to prepare organosilicone based compounds and materials.It is used in many silicone based materials such as Liquid Silicone Rubber, Conformal Coatings, Micro-Chip Packaging, Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) and Release Coatings. Most thermally-curable release coating systems are based on a hydrosilylation reaction enabled cure process. Scheme 1 demonstrates the hydrosilylation reaction mechanism as employed in a typical release coating formulation. One of the four key components involved in the hydrosilylation reaction is the inhibitor. It plays an important role in controlling the coating system reactivity and cure performance.<br/>In theory, a large number of chemicals can be used as hydrosilylation inhibitors. However, the contradictory fast cure and long working bath life requirements of release coatings exclude most of them. As a result, only a very limited number of inhibitors have been successfully commercialized and used in release coating products. In this paper, the common commercial inhibitors employed in release coatings are compared comprehensively from physical property, compatibility with PDMS, inhibition capability, bathlife and cure performance on pilot coater at different cure temperature perspectives. The complexation mechanism of one typical inhibitor is also discussed. This study brings deep understanding of the performance of inhibitors from release coating perspective and benefits the development of new release coatings.
