The synthesis of novel 2D polymers is often hindered by a lack of concrete design rules for their synthesis. This results in a limited number of monomeric building blocks to make “crystalline” structures. In many cases, porous polymers can be obtained under conventional COF synthesis conditions, however, if not designed properly, the resulting polymers will be amorphous in structure. We are using the tools of computational chemistry and organic synthesis to design new 2D polymers that utilize designed non-covalent interactions, such as dipolar aromatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. This presentation will discuss the impact these interactions could have on the future applications for 2D polymers beyond energy storage.
