The development of micro- and nanofabrication techniques has allowed scientists and engineers to envision and develop new technologies that have drastically changed the way in which we communicate, travel, fight diseases, use energy more efficiently, etc. With the advent of devices and systems with sizes scaling down to the level where molecular/atomic interactions become significant, the classical formulation of our laws of physics fails in predicting the occurrence of phenomena commonly hidden and unrelatable to our everyday perception of the macroscopic world. For example, nanoscale confined flows are found in technologies in the developing stage, such as lab-on-a-chip, nanochannels for cooling applications, drug delivery systems, disease diagnostic devices, etc. Unlike its macroscopic counterpart, several gaps and a lack of consensus exist in the understanding of the momentum and thermal energy transport mechanisms in nanoconfined liquids. However, a departure point can be established, the fact that atomic level interactions between interfacial solids and liquids govern the behavior of energy and momentum transport.<br/>In an effort to lay the foundations for a bottom-up design process of micro- and nanofluidic devices, the properties of 2D materials and semiconductor-water interfaces have been be probed using molecular scale modeling methods. A few experimental and several numerical investigations suggest that a relationship exists between the macroscopic observations of wetting behavior and hydrodynamic slip, as well as the interfacial thermal resistance at solid-liquid interfaces. However, recent findings by the speaker and a few other researchers have demonstrated that the interfacial liquid depletion dictates both, thermal and hydrodynamic transport. During this talk, the modulation of interfacial liquid ordering will be presented as a new approach for tailoring the design of micro- and nanofluidic devices with applications ranging from the biomedical field to engineering cooling technologies.<br/>
