To investigate the effect of short reinforced glass fiber on the scratch behavior of PBT(Polybutylene terephthalate) composites, various glass fiber contents (10%, 20%, 30%) and two scratch directions (parallel and perpendicular to the glass fiber orientation) were adopted to conduct scratch tests. The linear progressively increasing scratch normal load was applied using a home-made scratch machine. Various scratch damage modes (surface sliding, fish-scale, material removal) were microscopically observed. It has been found that, the reinforced glass fiber shows a significant influence on the scratch behaviors of PBT composites. The scratch resistance along the parallel direction is better than that along perpendicular one. The higher the glass fiber content is, the smaller the area of the fish-scale damage is. The fish-scale disappears for the PBT+30%GF scratched parallel and PBT+20%GF scratched perpendicularly. The discussion on the scratch damage mechanisms of can give valuable guidance for improving the scratch resistance of glass fiber reinforced PBT composites.
