Ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, Fe(VI)) has shown an increasing interest in the past decade due to its multi-purpose functions such oxidation, disinfection, coagulation, and precipitation. A number of studies are forthcoming on oxidation of a wide range of organic contaminants by ferrate(VI). A summary of the kinetics of the reaction between ferrate(VI) and organic contaminants suggests that some of the contaminants have sluggish reactivity and could not be treated efficiently by ferrate(VI). Furthermore, self-decomposition of ferrate(VI) under natural water conditions lower the oxidation capacity and also the required ferrate(VI) doses. This paper presents overcoming of these limitations by activating the ferrate(VI). Presentation will give examples of simple acids addition (acetic acid, hydrochloric, and nitric acids) into the ferrate(VI)-contaminant solution to activate ferrate(VI). Other examples include combinations of ferrate(VI) with ammonia, peroxomonosulfate, and sulfur(IV) to accelerate the oxidation of organic contaminants. Mechanisms of the activation ferrate(VI) will be elucidated.
