Pollutants such as carbon dioxide, lead and mercury generated from fossil fuel electric plants have become an area of environmental concern.   As such there is a drive to use “green” energy sources such as solar or wind to reduce emissions generated from fossil fuel electric plants.  The Great Lakes Water Authority Lake Huron Water Treatment Plant (located in southeast Michigan) has taken steps to identify processes that use the most electricity.  These processes include the backwashing of filters and the startup of water pumps.   Protocols were then developed to ideally perform these operations during times in which the majority of electricity came from clean energy sources.  Ideal times were determined using data obtained by Wayne State and Locational Emissions Estimation Methodology.  With these protocols in place, a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions was observed as well as lead, mercury and other pollutants.   In addition, electricity usage decreased thereby reducing operating costs.   These strategies help to reduce harmful emissions into the environment while at the same time reducing operating costs.  <br/>
