How viruses efficiently infect its host and manipulate its processes for its own benefit provides important lessons and resources for creating engineered biological systems with novel functions. The genetic code expansion technology, which has made available a large assortment of unnatural amino acids with novel chemical functionalities that can be site-specifically incorporated into proteins in living cells, also has created new opportunities to engineer biological systems. The synergistic interplay of these two disciplines holds much promise to advance their individual progress while creating new paradigms for synthetic biology. Research in our group focuses on the exciting interface of mammalian genetic code expansion technology and non-enveloped human viruses (e.g., adeno-associated virus). We are facilitating the application of the tools from each of these disciplines to advance the scope of the other.
