From readily available starting materials, we developed a facile strategy to synthesize lipid-polymer conjugates (LPCs). Scalable access to multigram quantities of a dialkyl lipid chain transfer agent allows a range of LPCs to be prepared bearing hydrophilic polymer head-groups using photoelectron transfer RAFT polymerization (PET-RAFT). The resulting LPCs were suitable for solution-phase self-assembly to afford micelles and vesicles. The versatility of LPCs was further demonstrated through their use as surface ligands for the stabilization and property manipulation of gold nanoparticles in water. We anticipate LPC-based building blocks to play important roles in the development of diverse biotechnology and biomedical applications.
