Poly (phenylene sulfide) (PPS) is an attractive polymer as engineering plastics because of their high mechanical strength and thermal stability, although the applications have been limited because of their brittleness. Herein, Poly (phenylene sulfide)/nylon 6 grafted graphene oxide (PPS/NGO) nanocomposite is introduced as promising nanocomposite materials for engineering plastics. PPS/NGO nanocomposite was prepared through the micro-compounding process using melted PPS and the small amount of NGO which had been made through ring-opening polymerization using ε-caprolactam. NGO contributes to alleviating brittleness of PPS because nylon 6 is known as high elongation polymer. Moreover, graphene nano-sheets endow PPS with the enhanced mechanical strength and thermal stability because of their mechanical reinforcing and thermal barrier effects. For example, when 0.03 wt% of NGO was used as a filler for nanocomposite, the values of tensile strength and elongation at break increase by 32 % and 30 %, respectively, while the value of Young’s modulus decreases. Also, thermal decomposition temperature for 5 % weight loss increases from 481 to 488 <sup>o</sup>C, indicating that thermal degradation is retarded. These advances are due to the well-dispersed NGO in PPS matrix, which is clarified through the morphologies by using SEM and EDS mapping analysis.
