Identifying how lattice oxygen in metal oxides that catalyze the oxygen-derived reaction is essential for the development of efficient energy and environmental technologies. The tradeoff between thermodynamic restriction and product distribution for propane dehydrogentaion remains challanging. Here, we propose a chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) process to convert propane into propylene in a two-step redox scheme. At 500 °C, we obtain 35% propane conversion and 89% propene selectivity for 100 redox cycles. This is enabled by vanadium oxides that facilely activates lattice oxygen redox reactions with complementary properties. On the basis of 17O NMR and in situ/operando technologies, we provide insights into the identification of distinct lattice oxygen-derived oxygenate grades and dynamic evolution of various oxygen species under reaction conditions, manipulating the refined oxygen activation by MoVOx tailored for enhanced propane dehydrogenation.
