Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials composed of organic linkers joined by metal nodes. Using the chemically and thermally robust UiO-type MOFs, we have demonstrated that a guest molecule larger than the pore aperture size can be encapsulated within the MOF by taking advantage of aperture opening events that occur as a result of a dissociative linker exchange mechanism. In this work, host-guest interactions are probed by encapsulating Rhodamine 6G in UiO-66 and UiO-67 with varied functionality on the linkers. Within the UiO-66 series, it was found that functionality exhibited a dramatic effect on the photophysical behavior of the dye. In contrast, UiO-67 and its derivatives, with their larger pore size, had a much less pronounced effect. These effects suggested that confinement plays an important role in host-guest interactions that may be further exploited in catalytic applications.
