Rechargeable aqueous-based Zn battery has attracted increasing interest as an alternative energy solution for large-scale energy storage due to its low cost, high environmental benignity, and high energy. Nevertheless, several critical fundamental issues of rechargeability and long-term cyclic stability in rechargeable Zn batteries, such as the widely investigated Zn-MnO<sub>2</sub> battery, are still unsolved. Here, we will discuss our recent understanding on how to realize and maintain the highly reversible reactions through a controlled electrode/electrolyte interface in optimized neutral aqueous electrolyte systems.
