Ketones are a group of reactive compounds which occur commonly in fossil fuels with small quantities. However, little attention is paid to their geological origin.<br/><i>In this study, we applied chemical derivatization with Girard T to enhance the sensitivity of ketones in electrospray ionization source. Gas chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Fourier ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and Orbitrap mass spectrometry (Orbitrap MS) were used for molecular characterization of ketones in three source rock extracts. Abundant aliphatic ketones and aromatic ketones were detected, including long-chain alkyl ketones, fluorenone, benzofluorenone, naphthofluorenone etc. The high abundance of ketones compounds may be related to the oxidation of organic matter in outcrop rock and may be also determined by a particular microbial community.</i><br/>GC-MS, combined with high-resolution mass spectrometry, could provide a detailed information on the molecular composition of ketones in fossil fuels; The detection of highly abundant ketones was quite unexpected and their geological origin and significance were worthy of further studying.
