Cyclodextrins possess a remarkable ability to form strong inclusion complexes with various small molecule guests using non-covalent interactions to promote strong complexation. Previous work in the Levine group has shown that the association of small molecule analytes and fluorescent dyes in the hydrophobic cavity of a cyclodextrin host produces analyte-induced fluorescence modulation or analyte-to-fluorophore energy transfer, leading to unique fluorescence signals that are observable spectroscopically. The high analyte specificity, strong responsiveness to small analyte concentrations, and general applicability have allowed for the creation of array-based detection systems for a wide variety of environmental toxicants. The continuation of this work includes the development of a practical and portable cyclodextrin-based paper device for the detection of toxicants in real-world environments. In textile industries, cyclodextrins have been grafted onto cellulose via esterification with polycarboxylic acid linkers and used for a variety of applications, such as the removal of odor or the release of fragrances, antibacterial agents or pesticides. Reported herein is the design, implementation and optimization of a strategy for the surface chemical modification of filter paper with cyclodextrin and fluorescent cyclodextrin derivatives using various polycarboxylic acids as crosslinking agents.<br/>
