In this talk, I will present an example highlighting that 8 nm intermetallic core/shell L10-FePt/Pt with ~2 atomic layers of Pt shell is chemically stable against fast/deep Fe etching for active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. The smooth thin Pt shell is compressed due to its epitaxial binding with the L10-FePt core and the core/shell L10-FePt/Pt NPs become catalytically more active than either the 8 nm Pt NPs or the commercial TKK-Pt (2 nm) NPs, showing superior mass activity (0.7 A mg-1 at 0.9 V) and much better durability under the fuel cell testing (without noticeable activity loss in the 30,000 fuel cell testing cycles between 0.6 V and 0.95 V at 80°C). As a comparison, the commercial TKK-Pt lost 56 % of its mass activity in the same fuel cell testing condition. When Fe is replaced by Co in the L10-FePt/Pt structure, the L10-CoPt/Pt catalysis is further enhanced with both mass activity and stability meeting the DOE 2020 targets. We are working to reduce the size of the L10-MPt/Pt NPs to achieve higher mass activity and to use them as a robust catalyst for PEMFC applications.
