Multiple measurements of temperature, electron density, duration, size, mass ablated, and homogeniety are made for laser-induced plasmas formed on a variety of common solid martrices including polyvinyl alcohol, aluminum, potassium bromide, cellulose proprionate, and graphite. Principal component analysis is performed on the measurements made in these common matrices to produce plots in which the matrices can be distinguished. Similar measurements are then made in various sample matrices (teeth, bone, fingernails, sea shells, and wood), and the position of the sample matrix in principal component space is used to determine the most suitable common matrix for making standards. The results of the subsequent analyses are presented.
