This talk will discuss examples of materials systems where information about detailed molecular or morphological structure lead to new insights about the properties and performance of optoelectronic materials. In colloidal PbS quantum dots, coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom lead to the formation of quasi-continuum states especially in strongly quantum confined systems. This coupling causes fast charge carrier cooling, which has made it difficult to identify the hot-phonon bottleneck in such systems. In singlet fission sensitizers such as pentacenes, detailed analysis of structure and dynamics reveal how intermolecular interactions control the separation and transport of triplet excitons that are multiplied from singlet excited states. In organo-halide perovskites, vibrational dynamics of native molecular probes reveal how large amplitude lattice fluctuations couple to extended transport states and prevent self-trapping of charge carriers, which enable significant carrier mobility and large polarons despite their highly polarizable lattice.
