Recently, it has been reported that certain common barbiturate drugs have found their way into commercial lots of dog food. These drug residues are likely to have entered the food processing supply chain through the use of these drugs in the humane euthanization of large animals such as horses and cattle. Once these euthanized animals have been rendered, they are often mixed in with meat obtained from other sources for their ultimate use in the preparation of pet foods. There is now clearly a need to assay the levels of such drugs in any pet food preparations to ensure that residual drug levels are present only in levels that would not be harmful to the health of our beloved pets. Techniques for efficiently accomplishing this task will be presented in this study. Protocols including sample preparation using solid phase extraction (SPE) followed by applying chromatography for the separations of these drugs. The use of MS detection for the needed sensitivity to reliably determine these barbiturate drug residue levels will also be described.
