We will describe the development and application of platforms that permit mutagenesis and selection of protein function in human cells. These platforms have enabled an improved understanding of how chaperones impact protein evolution, especially at the host-viral pathogen interface. Ongoing efforts to better understand human evolution using these strategies, as well as to design novel, functional biotechnologies will also be discussed.
