Layered LiMO2 (M = Ni, Mn, and Co) cathodes with Ni contents &gt; 60% are receiving tremendous interest for lithium-ion batteries as they offer practical capacities in excess of 200 mAh/g. However, multiple phase transitions and high surface reactivity with the electrolyte, resulting in microcracks and thick solid-electrolyte interphase, limit their cycle life and practical viability. This presentation will focus on a fundamental understanding of the bulk phase transitions and electrode-electrolyte interfacial chemistry with nickel contents as high as 94%, employing advanced characterization techniques, such as time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Based on the understanding gained, the presentation will then focus on approaches, such as doping, to suppress the phase transitions and surface reactivity. Electrochemical and characterization data collected with long-term cycling (e.g., 1,500 cycles) of pouch full cells fabricated with graphite anode and high-nickel cathodes will be presented.
