Large-scale grid storage of electricity produced from solar and wind requires low-cost, safe, long-life battery systems based on abundant, environmentally compatible materials. Aqueous batteries are appealing in this regard, but the crossover of chemicals between the anode and cathode through the porous polymeric separators reduces the efficiency and limits cycle life. To overcome this challenge, this presentation will focus on battery systems based on solid electrolytes, which can eliminate chemical crossover and dendrite penetration. With this strategy, complete aqueous systems based on a Zn or Fe anode, a lithium-ion or sodium-ion solid electrolyte serving as a mediator-ion electrolyte, and a variety of aqueous catholytes (<i>e.g</i>., polysulfide, quinone, bromine, and air in a basic or acidic medium) will be presented. The use of a solid electrolyte also allows hybrid systems based on lithium or sodium metal anode in a nonaqueous medium and air in an acidic or basic aqueous medium.
