Microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) was prepared by dissolution of jute cellulose using phosphoric acid (85 wt% ) at 70 °C for 30 minutes, followed by regeneration through ethanol at room temperature. The process to generate MFC using phosphoric acid is found simple and fast. The produced MFC were characterized using FTIR, WAXD, 13C CPMAS NMR, TEM and SAXS. The MFC generated from phosphoric acid treatment possesed a minute concentration of phoshorus of 138 ppb, having -8.4 mV zeta potential, indicating the occurrence of low phosphorylation during this reaction condition. The conversion of cellulose I to cellulose II during this treatment was proved by analysis using WAXD and 13C CPMAS NMR. The produced MFC suspension appeared milky because of the agglomeration of fibers due to absence of charges. Hence, MFC was decorated with Zinc oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles. The successful loading of zinc oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles on MFC was characterized using FTIR, WAXD, TEM. The simulated water containing different concentrations of Arsenic (III) and Arsenic (V) were used to study the remediation effect of MFC supported Zinc oxide/hydroxide. Furthermore, ICP-MS analysis results shows that the Arsenic adsorption efficency of MFC supported Zinc oxide/hydroxide was &gt; 90%.
