Ever since the initial development of solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents, numerous technological advances have allowed cleaner and more specific extraction of biological samples. Some of these include the development of polymeric reversed-phase sorbents, mixed-mode ion-exchange sorbents, and novel formats such as tip based and microelution formats. In addition, recent years have seen the development of products such as phospholipid depletion plates and solid-liquid extraction (SLE) plates.<br/>Most recently, novel sorbents have been developed that combine the properties of pass through phospholipid removal plates with the desired attributes of traditional SPE sorbents, such as specific selectivities and the ability to concentrate target analytes. This presentation will discuss the capabilities of these novel sorbents, including their ability to remove phospholipids, and the subsequent analytical improvements resulting from these cleaner samples. Specific examples from bioanalysis, clinical research and forensic toxicology will be presented. In addition, attendees will learn many of the key method development strategies and parameters that can be adjusted to optimize the performance of modern SPE sorbents.
