Intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) have recently received great attention for their catalytic properties due to the precise tunability of their geometric and electronic surface structure; however, achieving morphological control of intermetallic NPs is challenging due to the high temperature required during synthesis. We present a synthetic strategy for the formation of shape-controlled intermetallic NPs using core-sandwich-shell NPs as precursors. The required annealing temperature to form the intermetallic phase depends on the nanostructure morphology due to the structure-dependent defect concentrations, diffusion lengths, and interfacial energies. Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), a series of lattice measurements, and x-ray diffraction (XRD), the crystal structure of the intermetallic NPs is studied. To probe the NP electronic structure, a series of electrochemical small molecule oxidations is performed. The platform and insights presented herein represent an important step toward to the realization of shape-controlled intermetallic NPs tailored to each potential application.
